About me
I am currently a second year Philosophy and Politics student at Manchester Metropolitan University and my main academic interests are gender and sexuality studies. Personally, I am interested in mixed media art and film. My aim with this blog is to cultivate discussion about sexuality studies in a safe space through the lens of film. I want to highlight and inspire political thought in creative spaces.
Self reflection
I have been interested in gender and sexuality for most of my life. It’s important to me, as a queer woman to understand the history of women’s and LGBTQIA+ liberation and the theories that can be applied to further ensure protection and liberation of these communities. The university module Gender, Race and Sexuality has allowed me to explore this topic at length, to further my understanding of thinkers like Simone de Beauvoir, Judith Butler and Gayle Rubin. As well as deepen my understanding of their theories such as: women as the ‘other’, performativity and the ‘sex/gender system’. This module has also introduced new concepts to me such as Gayle Rubins charmed circle theory which speaks to the idea that there is a hierarchical valuation of sex acts. Something I had never considered before, that has helped me conceptualize sexual ethics and brought to agree with Gayle that a ‘democratic morality should judge sexual acts by the way partners treat one another’ (2002) In sum, it’s been extremely beneficial for me to compare my own thoughts to academic books and articles to further my understandings.
